The launch of the International Consortium of Performing Arts Organisations (ICPAO) and Youth Cultural Ambassador Awards 2024 took place at Hamsadhwani’s NRI Festival in Chennai on Monday.
The awards, presented to nine musicians for their achievements in Carnatic vocals and instrumentals, were given by SNA awardee Nandini Ramani, playback Singer Nithyasree Mahadevan, and industrialist Nalli Kuppuswami Chetti, with a sponsorship from YADA.
R. Sundar, secretary of Hamsadhwani, said the dream of his father R. Ramachandran, who founded Hamsadhwani, to establish a world cultural forum involving organisations from different countries had now come to life.
Ranjini Kaushik, founder of SciArtsRUs, shared her excitement about the launch ICPAO, with the initial 12 organisations from the United States, India, Norway, Belgium, Japan, Malaysia, and Australia. Through ICPAO, they aim to provide opportunities for performances at existing events or specially curated events, as well as nurture intra and intercultural exchange programmes for people of Indian origin living outside and within India. She added that the goal was to elevate the profile of the talented artistes.
Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Nandini, the chief guest for the event, emphasised that parental support was crucial to learn music and the achievement of the awardees were also reflections of the unyielding encouragement they received from their parents.
Ms. Nithyasree said Chennai had been featured as one of the most creative cities, and especially in the month of Margazhi, over 3,000-4,000 concerts were held in a period of 15 days. “ICPAO is a much-needed initiative for Carnatic musicians worldwide. Today, a talented Carnatic singer comes from any country,” she added, reflecting on Carnatic music’s reach around the world.
Mr. Chetti, the guest of honour for the event, also congratulated all the awardees of the day, and encouraged them to keep growing in their chosen music fields.
