A man still on the run after RCMP say he escaped a jail northeast of Moncton earlier this month was previously charged with nine weapon-related charges, including carrying a restricted handgun and possessing a knife for dangerous purposes, court documents reveal.
Todd John Lewis, of Moncton, jumped the fence of the Southeast Regional Correctional Centre in Shediac the evening of Feb. 12 and fled on foot toward nearby Route 15, according to RCMP.
Police said they were informed of the escape more than six hours after it happened, just after midnight. The public was warned the next day.
Provincial court records obtained by CBC News show RCMP laid nine charges against Lewis on Jan. 21. Most of the offences, which are alleged to have occurred near High Street and Park Street in Moncton, relate to a gun he could not have in his possession due to probation orders.
Lewis is charged with possessing a loaded, restricted Tokarev TT-33 pistol, which is a semi-automatic handgun produced in the former Soviet Union and used by Soviet forces during the Second World War.
He’s also charged with carrying the pistol without a licence and in a careless manner.
The documents also show that in August 2025, Judge D. Troy Sweet prohibited Lewis from owning a restricted firearm for “the period of life.”
Lewis is also charged with possessing a knife "for a purpose dangerous to the public peace" and failing to comply with probation orders to keep the peace and abstain from owning a weapon.
Handwritten notes on the court documents show Lewis was denied bail on Jan. 30. He was scheduled to elect his mode of trial on Feb. 27.
Records show Lewis was born in Moncton and is 36 years old, not 35, as previously reported by the RCMP.
His address is listed as being on Rocket Avenue in a trailer park off Salisbury Road in the southwest end of the city.
On Monday, a spokesperson for the RCMP said they have no updates about the search for Lewis, only that it is ongoing.
Lewis is about five feet seven inches tall, 146 pounds and has blond hair and blue eyes, RCMP have said. He was wearing blue pants, a brown coat and a black hat.
Police have advised anyone who sees Lewis not to approach him because he may be armed and dangerous. They also asked the public not to pick up hitchhikers and to report anything suspicious to RCMP.
