India–EU trade deal a boost for long-term ties amid global uncertainty: EU VP Kaja Kallas
India Today
Described as the "mother of all deals", India–EU trade pact is expected to boost trade, lower barriers, and deepen economic ties between the two sides.
India and the European Union have successfully concluded their long-awaited free trade agreement, often described as the “mother of all deals”. Speaking to India Today, European Commission Vice President Kaja Kallas said the landmark India–EU free trade agreement marks a shift towards stable and reliable partnerships in an uncertain global environment.
The agreement is expected to boost trade, lower barriers, and deepen economic ties between the two sides.
However, the benefits will not be immediate. Kallas said the deal must first pass through formal processes on both sides.
“Of course, it takes a bit of time because we are both democracies, and in democracies there are procedures these deals need to go through,” she said. “But we still hope it goes fast because it’s beneficial for both parties.”
The timing of the agreement has drawn attention, especially after years of slow progress between India and the EU. When asked if global tariff tensions helped speed things up, Kallas pointed to changing global realities.
“The geopolitical landscape definitely helps with this,” she said. “We had big partners before, but now the landscape is such that we need to build partnerships with countries that believe in free trade.”
