Hilary nears Mexico's Baja California peninsula as Southern California braces for impact

Hurricane Hilary was classified Saturday a Category 1 as the storm moved closer to Mexico's Baja California and officials warned of "catastrophic flooding" to that region and the southwestern U.S.
In its latest bulletin on Sunday morning at 8 a.m. ET / 5 a.m. PT, the National Hurricane Center said the storm was located about 285 miles south of San Diego, California. The storm is expected to made landfall in Mexico on Sunday.
As of that advisory, the storm had maximum sustained winds of 80 mph. It is the first time ever that the National Hurricane Center to issue a tropical storm warning for Southern California, and California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm.
