
Freezing drizzle expected through evening commute in Waterloo region, Guelph and area

Freezing rain continues to fall in Waterloo region, Guelph and Wellington County and will impact the afternoon commute on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, school buses and transportation were cancelled by schools remained open.
A yellow-level weather warning was issued Wednesday afternoon for freezing drizzle, which is expected to "linger" into the evening. The yellow warning replaced an earlier orange-level weather warning for freezing rain.
The weather warning said freezing drizzle could possibly last overnight.
"Roads, walkways, and other surfaces will likely become icy and slippery. There is risk of injury due to slips and falls," the warning noted.
To the east of the area, in Toronto, a winter storm yellow-level warning is in effect and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said during the morning and early afternoon, there had been more than 160 weather-related crashes.
"It will be a messy day," OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt warned people in a video on X, formerly Twitter. "Keep your eyes up, hands on the wheel, eyes on the road, keep your mind focused on the task of driving, let's make sure we get through this day without a problem."
Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region said buses and other school transportation were cancelled "due to the forecasted freezing rain."
Schools in Waterloo region were open as were all extended day child care programs, St. Louis online, daytime, and evening classes and schools were expected to be open for community use programs.
Francobus, which services French-language schools, also said buses were cancelled in Waterloo region on Wednesday.
Student Transportation Services of Wellington-Dufferin said school buses in all zones were cancelled Wednesday.
GO Transit warned customers there could be delays for its routes around southwestern Ontario and the Greater Toronto Area and encouraged people to plan ahead and allow extra time for travel.
Geoff Coulson, a warning preparedness meteorologist for Environment Canada, told CBC K-W's The Morning Edition host Craig Norris people can expect "patchy freezing drizzle" into Wednesday evening and possibly overnight.
He said an orange-level warning was issued because of the duration of the weather event.
