Washington: The US military announced Friday that four of the six crew members aboard a military aircraft that crashed in western Iraq have been confirmed dead, while search and rescue efforts are ongoing to locate the two missing personnel.
In a statement, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, noting that the aircraft's loss was not the result of hostile or friendly fire.
CENTCOM said yesterday that a KC-135 aerial refueling tanker crashed while conducting an air-to-air refueling mission in western Iraq, while a second aircraft involved in the incident landed safely.
