Farmers trained in environmental monitoring of paddy fields

A training session on environmental monitoring of paddy fields was conducted for the farmers of Thenpathu village near Manur in Tirunelveli district recently. The benefits of using lesser amounts of pesticides, the need to protect crops from the onslaught of insects and worms, and the importance of producing non-toxic food items were highlighted in the training.

T. Esakkiappan, Assistant Director of Agriculture, Manur region, explained pest and disease control in organic, biological and chemical methods, depending on the soil fertility and the growth stage of the crops.
Malarvizhi, Agricultural Officer, trained the farmers in adopting integrated crop protection methods to achieve high yield at low cost. She also elaborated on the importance of biological factors and methods for controlling pests and diseases.
The farmers from Thenpathu and nearby villages participated in the programme.
