Tamil Nadu inaugurates its first eco-tourism campsite in Anamalai Tiger Reserve, promoting regulated trekking and community livelihoods.
Tamil Nadu’s first dedicated eco-tourism campsite under the Trek Tamil Nadu initiative was inaugurated at Sethumadai in Pollachi block of Coimbatore district on Saturday.
The facility has been set up by the Tamil Nadu Wilderness Experience Corporation within the Anamalai Tiger Reserve and will function as a base for guided trekking, including access to Top Slip and Parambikulam.
Forest Minister R. S. Rajakannappan inaugurated the campsite and released the Tamil Nadu Trek Atlas. The atlas lists more than 40 trekking trails across 14 districts and includes trail maps, elevation details and difficulty levels.
According to the Forest Department, the camp will conduct trekking, birdwatching and nature interpretation programmes led by trained guides. It is operated by members of the local tribal community. The camp will open to visitors from March 15, with bookings through the Trek Tamil Nadu portal.
A Trekking Guides’ Code of Conduct was also released. The code prescribes safety protocols, wildlife viewing norms and adherence to “Leave No Trace” principles.
The Minister said the government would link tourism with conservation and community livelihoods. He referred to Trek Tamil Nadu as the basis for regulated trekking access in forest areas.
