FIFA president Gianni Infantino said US President Donald Trump had assured that Iran would be allowed to travel to the United States to compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The confirmation came amid growing doubts over Iran's participation due to rising geopolitical tensions.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has said that US President Donald Trump has agreed that Iran will be allowed to travel to the United States to compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite the ongoing tensions in West Asia. The assurance comes amid growing uncertainty over whether Iran would be able to participate in matches scheduled on American soil.
The tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, has seen Iran drawn into a group where all their matches are set to be played in the US. Speaking after a meeting with Trump, Infantino said the American president had made it clear that the Iranian national team would be welcomed for the tournament.
“We also spoke about the current situation in Iran, and the fact that the Iranian team has qualified to participate in the FIFA World Cup 2026,” Infantino said.
“During the discussions, President Trump reiterated that the Iranian team is, of course, welcome to compete in the tournament in the United States.”
“We all need an event like the FIFA World Cup to bring people together now more than ever,” Infantino added, while thanking Trump for his support.
Iran are scheduled to open their campaign against New Zealand national football team in Inglewood on June 15. They will then face Belgium national football team on June 21 before finishing their group-stage fixtures against Egypt national football team in Seattle on June 26.
