President Donald Trump is trying to use a different law to impose new 15% global tariffs. But Democrats say they'll ensure the taxes are temporary.
WASHINGTON – Congressional Democrats say they won't let President Donald Trump's new 15% global tariffs last longer than 150 days, creating another roadblock for the White House in the wake of a bruising Supreme Court defeat.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-New York, said Feb. 23 that Senate Democrats will block any potential efforts this summer to extend the import taxes, which the president swiftly imposed after the high court struck down his sweeping emergency tariffs.
"Democrats will not go along with furthering Trump’s economic carnage," Schumer said in a statement.
Though the Democratic opposition in Congress was expected, it highlighted the challenges the White House now faces in preserving one of the president's favored policy tools since the Supreme Court's justices ruled his legal rationale for the fees was unlawful.
