
Cyclone Fengal crosses T.N. coast

Cyclonic storm Fengal hits North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds, prompting red alerts.
Cyclonic storm Fengal crossed North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts, close to Puducherry, between 10:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Saturday (November 30, 2024) as a cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph.
The storm, which began crossing the coast at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, brought with it copious amounts of rainfall. In the last 24 hours beginning 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Mayilam in Villupuram district recorded 50 cm of rain and Puducherry 46 cm.

According to S. Balachandran, Additional Director General of Meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre Chennai, three places recorded extremely heavy rains, six places very heavy rains and 20 heavy rains. As far Puducherry is concerned, this was the highest it recorded so far. The previous record was 21 cm of rainfall on October 32, 2004.
Other stations that recorded considerable amounts of rainfall include Tiruvannamalai recorded 17.6 cm, Cheyyar 16 cm, Jaya Engineering College at Thirunindravur 13.6 cm, R.K. Pet in Tiruvallur district 12.4 cm, Kolapakkam in Kancheepuram district 12 cm, Tiruttani 11.4 cm and Meenambakkam 11.3 cm.
As of 6:30 a.m. Sunday (December 1, 2024), it lay centered over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry near latitude 12.0°N and longitude 79.8°E, close to Puducherry. It has not moved in the last three hours.
