A cyclist was struck and killed by the driver of a flatbed truck in midtown Toronto Tuesday afternoon, police say.
Investigators say the incident happened in the area of Avenue Road and Elgin Avenue around 1:23 p.m.
Police say a 39-year-old man was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead, and that the driver involved stopped after the collision.
Speaking with reporters at the scene, Insp. Jeff Bangild said preliminary investigation suggests the truck was going south on Avenue Road and was attempting to turn to enter a construction site.
While waiting to make that turn, the man on the bike was next to the truck, he said. When the driver started to make the turn to enter the construction site, the truck hit the cyclist, he said.
"There is no evidence in any way at this point to suggest who is at fault or what actions caused what," Bangild said, adding that officers are now gathering evidence.
Investigators are asking people to avoid the area, and say Avenue Road is closed from Lowther Avenue to Davenport Road.
Bangild said police are attempting to have roadways open within an hour or so.
