Charlottetown considering 3 more apartment buildings along Mount Edward Road

The City of Charlottetown is considering adding three apartment buildings along Mount Edward Road near the city’s bypass highway.
A request from Ellis and Birt Ltd. asks the city to rezone a piece of property along Mount Edward Road to allow for the buildings to go up. The project would bring 87 more apartment units to the city.
Charlottetown City Council voted unanimously to send the project for public consultation. But there hasn't been much pushback on recent developments along Mount Edward Road, said Coun. Alanna Jankov, chair of the city's planning and heritage committee.
“I think people recognize this as one of those areas, you know, when we talk about our draft official plan, you're close to some… services, you're close to your buses, your transportation,” Jankov said.
The proposed development is also close to the Confederation Trail and across the street from St. Martha's Court, where other recently built apartments sit.
Several developments have been approved for Mount Edward Road over the last few years, which has raised traffic concerns from some residents.
“We wouldn't be a growing city without complaints on traffic. But those will be questions which will come up during that public consultation time where the public will ask… questions around the development, the long term planning, the traffic studies, you know, what we're going to do around congestion on traffic,” Jankov said.
The first part of the process is a public consultation, then the project will go back to the city’s planning board before it eventually makes its way to council, Jankov said.
“They could very well require additional council approval, whether they're major variances, minor variances.”
A date for the public consultation has not yet been set, but residents who live nearby will be notified in the next few weeks, Jankov said.
