Piercing wind is blowing in Calgary and across central and southern Alberta, and could reach gusting speeds of up to 100 km/h this morning.
Meanwhile in parts of central Alberta heavy snowfall falls in tandem with strong winds.
As of about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, Environment Canada issued a wind warning for the City of Calgary and surrounding areas. These include the communities of Airdrie, Cochrane, Olds, Sundre and Brooks.
Wind warnings are in effect for much of southeastern Alberta, reaching between Cochrane and Medicine Hat and down south as far as Waterton National Park.
Winds built up overnight across central and southern Alberta, some reaching 100 km/h.
In the Calgary area, the worst of the gusts are expected to taper off sometime in the morning, but areas to the east and north of the city will still get strong winds by the afternoon.
Environment Canada is warning that damage could occur to things like roofs and windows. Officials say to be aware of loose objects which can be easily picked up and carried by the wind.
On the roads, the winds can affect driving conditions so people should be vigilant.
Heavy snowfall is blanketing parts of central Alberta — also experiencing strong winds — which could get between 10 and 25 cm of precipitation.
Edmonton, St. Albert and Sherwood Park are under a snowfall warning and are anticipated to get winds blowing up to 70 km/h in the morning. The snowfall warning covers a swathe of central Alberta stretching from Grande Prairie to Slave Lake.
Environment Canada warns the combination of heavy snow and strong winds can make driving conditions more dangerous.
"Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Take frequent breaks and avoid strain when clearing snow," they said," they cautioned in an advisory.
