In a harrowing incident, a 27-year-old woman, Thenmozhi, who was riding a motorbike, suffered electric shock when an overhead power cable fell on her after three electric poles were uprooted near Stem Park in Thoothukudi on Wednesday.
Police said Ms. Thenmozhi from Ambedkar Nagar was riding a two-wheeler at Sundarvelpuram West along with a pillion rider. When she was crossing the main road near the anganwadi building, an electric pole started to lean all of a sudden.
The overhead cables pulled down two more adjacent poles and all three came crashing down. While the pillion rider, Muthumathi, 20, managed to jump off the bike and escaped narrowly, Ms. Thenmozhi suffered an electric shock, the police said.
“Since it was a single-phase electric line, the woman did not suffer much shock and the fuse went off immediately,” the police added.
Ms. Thenmozhi was rushed to Government Thoothukudi Medical College Hospital. “Her condition has improved a little bit, but she has neurological weakness,” said Resident Medical Officer J. Silas Jeyamani. The woman could not move her limbs.
She has been admitted to the intensive care unit and is under observation.
Tangedco Superintending Engineer M. Saharban said prolonged waterlogging afre rains had loosened the soil in the area, which had resulted in one of the poles leaning. The pole brought down with it two others.
