Ben Stokes retirement | ODIs or T20Is will go if boards are desperate for franchise tournaments: Michael Vaughan
India Today
England all-rounder Ben Stokes had an underwhelming ODI series against India as he was able to manage to score only 48 runs in three matches.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan has blamed the franchise tournaments around the world as the reason behind players retiring from one format of cricket.
In an unforeseen decision, all-rounder Ben Stokes, a member of the 2019 World Cup-winning England team, announced that he will be retiring from One-Day Internationals.
Stokes, who will play his farewell ODI match against South Africa on July 19, said that he did not want to take up the place of another cricketer, knowing he won't be able to give his 100 percent in the 50-over format of the game.
A disappointed Vaughan added that players should not be retiring from one format at the age of 31. "Bi lateral ODI / T20 series will have to go if all the boards around the world are desperate for there own Franchise tournaments !! Something has to give .. It shouldn’t be players retiring from one format aged 31!!!!"
