Anne Chafe, CEO of The Rooms, is set to retire this May.
Chafe has held leadership roles at the museum and art gallery for nearly two decades. She took over as interim CEO in July 2019 before being appointed to the top job in June 2020, nearly one year after the provincial government fired former CEO Dean Brinton with no explanation.
During her tenure as CEO, Chafe led the creation of three permanent museum exhibitions, including: Here We Made a Home, housed in the Elinor Gill Ratcliffe Gallery; From This Place: Our Lives on Land and Sea, housed in the Cenovus Energy Gallery; and Beaumont-Hamel and the Trail of the Caribou: Newfoundlanders and Labradorians Overseas and at Home, 1918–1949, housed in the Royal Newfoundland Regiment Gallery.
Tourism Minister Andrea Barbour issued a statement Wednesday evening after Chafe's retirement was announced. Barbour described Chafe as a “thoughtful steward of one of the province’s most important public institutions.”
Chafe is credited for leading The Rooms through a period of considerable transition.
Chair of The Rooms board of directors, Margaret Allan, said Chafe's legacy will be long lasting.
“Her contributions to the organization are immeasurable," Allan said in a news release.
Barbour said the tourism department will consult with The Rooms board of directors and the Independent Appointments Commission on the recruitment process for a new CEO.
