Air India unveiled the interiors of its first line‑fit Boeing 787‑9 (VT-AWA) on Tuesday. The day also marks exactly four years since the Tata Group officially reacquired the airline from the Government of India, in 2022. The aircraft, which was flown from Delhi to Begumpet, with mediapersons and officials from the airline and Boeing on board, will be a part of the aircraft display at Wings India 2026 in Hyderabad.
Speaking to the media, the airline’s CEO, Campbell Wilson, said that the new aircraft, which was delivered in January this year, is a part of the 470-aircraft order that was signed three years ago. The new cabin interiors will now be standard across the airline’s 787 fleet. This includes the airline’s legacy fleet of Boeing 787-8 aircraft which were acquired when Air India was a government enterprise. The airline also has six Boeing 787-9s which were a part of the Vistara fleet.
The three-class configured 296-seat aircraft has the Elevate Ascent seat in Business and the Recaro PL3530 and CL3710 seats in premium Economy and Economy. The inflight entertainment system is the Thales’ Avant Up, which will deliver 4K HDR picture quality and in-screen USB-A and USB-C high-speed charging. Air India said it has also introduced a mood lighting system in collaboration with Tata Elxsi. The aircraft is to enter commercial service on the Mumbai-Frankfurt sector from February 1.
Mr. Wilson told The Hindu that the airline will be receiving more widebody aircraft this year, with its first Airbus A350-1000 expected in Q3 of 2026.
