Abhay aims to break into top 20 by the end of the season

India’s top squash player, 27-year-old Abhay Singh, is known for his aggressive, adrenaline-driven style on court. Ranked world No. 26, he has already claimed 11 PSA Challenger titles and is now aiming to break into the top 20 by the end of the 2025-26 season.

Abhay said his “Challenger days are more or less done,” and plans to focus on higher-tier events—Copper, Silver, Gold, and Platinum—though he might play the occasional Challenger. “Now it’s about going into big events, winning or losing. I’m focused on bigger events,” he told The Hindu during a virtual call on Wednesday.

While the 2026 Asian Games loom large, offering a direct route to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics for the singles winner, Abhay is concentrating on the season. “We’re just focusing on the season. Six events remain, with the JSW Indian Open in Mumbai (Mar. 18 to 22) and the season-ending British Open (May 26–June 7) later. After that, my coaches James Willstrop and Harinder Singh and I will plan ahead,” he said.

Despite a modest start to the season, mostly second-round exits, Abhay remained confident. “Some results have been satisfactory. Hopefully, it stays consistent, and the ranking goes only upward,” he added.

Having defeated the likes of Karim Abdul Gawad (former World No.1 and world champion) in the 2025 Qatar Classic (Platinum Grade) and Farres Dessouky (WR 16) in the 2026 Windy City Open (Platinum), Abhay will hope for such results more often than not with the World championships (May 8 to 16 in Giza, Egypt) and Asian Games (September 19 to Oct. 4 in Japan) coming up.
