After three decades on the air, David Muir enjoys a large (and devoted) fan base ― and he’s learned to take their admiration in stride.
In an interview with People published over the weekend, the ABC News anchor was asked how he felt about being labeled a “daddy” by some of his more vocal admirers.
“People will forward TikTok videos, but only because they are laughing out loud at them and making fun of me and saying, ‘When did you become Daddy?’ So I don’t know whether that happens when you hit 50 or what, but I’ll take it as a compliment, I think,” Muir, 51, quipped. “Anyone who works with me knows that I am so uncomfortable even having to put on the tux. So the fact that I survive those events is still a surprise to me without looking like a total nerd.”
A Syracuse, New York, native, Muir got his start at the local CBS affiliate WTVH-TV in 1994. Nine years later, he joined ABC News as an anchor of the overnight news program “World News Now,” and has risen through the network’s ranks steadily since then, succeeding Diane Sawyer as the anchor and managing editor of ABC World News in 2014.
Though Muir’s coverage of U.S. politics has occasionally made him a target of criticism, the fan thirst for him is certainly palpable. A Tumblr blog titled “Gimme Gimme Muir” is devoted to playful snapshots and memes of Muir at home and on the road, while a TikTok video posted by New York Post’s Page Six shows a clip of the journalist entering the newsroom to the tune of George Michael’s “Father Figure.”
