Six people were hospitalized Wednesday after an American Airlines flight from Tampa, Florida, to Nashville, Tenessee, experienced severe turbulence and diverted to Birmingham, Alabama, a spokesperson for Birmingham's airport told CBS News.
The spokesperson did not provide any additional information on the turbulence or the condition of the hospitalized passengers, though she said another plane is likely to come to transport the remaining passengers to their destination. Neither American Airlines nor the Federal Aviation Administration immediately responded to a request for comment.
The National Transportation Safety Board said it was aware of the initial reports but had not yet decided whether to investigate.

Actor Richard Dreyfuss is facing backlash for allegedly sharing remarks that audience members found sexist, homophobic and generally offensive at a Q&A event over the weekend tied to a Massachusetts theater's screening of "Jaws." Dreyfuss starred in the 1975 blockbuster that was filmed in Massachusetts and screened Saturday night at The Cabot, a performing arts center in the coastal community of Beverly.
