The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says a man was killed outside a house on Golf Avenue on Wednesday morning, the victim of a targeted attack.
Following a short standoff earlier Wednesday at the house, which police surrounded with guns drawn, four people — two men and two women — were arrested.
At a news conference Wednesday afternoon, an RNC spokesperson said officers believe the victim and suspects were known to each other.
"The individuals in custody right now," Const. James Cadigan told reporters. "They are believed to be connected to what we are now investigating as a homicide."
The alleged slaying caused chaos in the central St. John's neighbourhood earlier Wednesday. Cadigan said police were called just after 10:30 a.m. for a "potential weapons offence," and when officers arrived, Cadigan said, it was clear there had been fighting in the street.
That's also when they found the victim, already dead.
At 11:20 a.m. Wednesday, the RNC issued a shelter-in-place order for residents of Golf Avenue, Ricketts Road, St. Clare Avenue and Army Street as they set up a perimeter around a house with the suspects hiding inside.
By noon, more than a dozen police vehicles surrounded the house, on the corner of Golf Avenue and St. Clare Avenue. Several officers crouched behind their squad cars, rifles drawn and pointed at the front door of the residence.
On a megaphone, officers demanded the occupants come out of the house with their hands up.
Minutes later, four people exited the building peacefully and were detained.
Several officers then entered the house, photographing the inside.
The RNC said Wednesday afternoon that its presence in the area will remain as officers continue to investigate. The force is asking anyone with information, particularly video footage of the area around 10 a.m. Wednesday, to contact police.
Cadigan would not say whether the suspects used any weapons during their alleged attack.
He also did not offer details about the identity of the victim, noting the force wants to ensure next of kin are notified.
