Three U.S. service members were killed and five were seriously injured amid the ongoing conflict in Iran, American military officials said on March 1.

"Several others sustained minor shrapnel injuries and concussions − and are in the process of being returned to duty," U.S. Central Command wrote in a post on X.

Officials said additional information, including the identities of the deceased, would be withheld until 24 hours after their next of kin have been notified.
The announcement of the first American casualties in the conflict came the day after the United States and Israel launched airstrikes that killed Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and other top officials. Iran quickly retaliated.
