El nombre de César Chávez, durante décadas sinónimo de lucha campesina y derechos civiles en Estados Unidos, está siendo cuestionado en múltiples ciudades del país. Calles, parques, escuelas y días festivos que llevan su nombre podrían cambiar, tras nuevas acusaciones de abuso sexual divulgadas en una investigación reciente.

De acuerdo con The New York Times, el reportaje recoge testimonios de más de 60 personas, incluidos exmiembros del sindicato United Farm Workers, documentos internos y registros históricos. Entre las denuncias, la líder Dolores Huerta afirmó que Chávez la agredió sexualmente, mientras otras mujeres aseguraron haber sido abusadas cuando eran menores. El medio indicó que no pudo corroborar todas las acusaciones.

El detonante fue una investigación publicada por The New York Times, basada en más de 60 entrevistas y documentos internos del sindicato United Farm Workers. En dicha investigación, varias mujeres —incluyendo a Huerta— acusan a Chávez de abuso sexual, con señalamientos que se remontan a décadas atrás. Huerta, cofundadora del movimiento campesino, declaró que mantuvo en secreto los hechos durante décadas por temor a afectar la causa por la que luchó toda su vida. Su testimonio, publicado tras la investigación, ha tenido un peso simbólico dentro y fuera de la comunidad latina.

Según el mismo reportaje, otras dos mujeres dijeron haber sido abusadas cuando tenían 12 y 13 años. Aunque algunos detalles no han podido ser verificados de forma independiente, el volumen de testimonios y evidencia documental ha generado una reacción inmediata. La familia de Chávez señaló estar “conmocionada y entristecida” y expresó apoyo a quienes han denunciado abuso.

El efecto dominó ya comenzó. En Los Ángeles, la alcaldesa Karen Bass firmó una proclamación para cambiar el “Día de César Chávez” por “Día de los Trabajadores Agrícolas”, mientras el condado evalúa renombrar calles, parques y edificios. En San José y Denver, autoridades anunciaron procesos para retirar su nombre de espacios públicos y abrir consultas comunitarias.
