En Cuba, donde las noches recientes han estado marcadas por apagones y largas filas para conseguir combustible, una noticia ha empezado a recorrer la isla y a resonar también entre millones de cubanos en el extranjero: La Habana reconoce que mantiene conversaciones con Washington.

El presidente cubano Miguel Díaz-Canel confirmó el 13 de marzo que su gobierno sostiene contactos con funcionarios de la administración del presidente Donald Trump, abriendo la puerta a lo que podría convertirse en uno de los cambios económicos más significativos entre ambos países en más de seis décadas. Las conversaciones —aún en etapas iniciales— llegan en medio de una profunda crisis energética en la isla y de presiones políticas crecientes desde Estados Unidos.

El anuncio de Díaz-Canel se produjo durante una intervención transmitida por la televisión estatal cubana y luego ampliada en una conferencia de prensa. Según el mandatario, las conversaciones buscan “soluciones mediante el diálogo” para las diferencias bilaterales entre ambos países.

Aunque la Casa Blanca no ha comentado públicamente, el reconocimiento oficial de La Habana confirma reportes recientes sobre contactos discretos entre funcionarios estadounidenses y representantes del gobierno cubano. Analistas señalan que, de concretarse, el acuerdo podría representar la apertura económica más importante desde las nacionalizaciones masivas que siguieron a la Revolución cubana de 1959.

En Washington, el presidente Trump ha sugerido que quiere que Cuba “haga un trato”, mientras su administración mantiene presión económica sobre la isla. Esa estrategia busca forzar cambios económicos o políticos que podrían influir en las relaciones comerciales, los viajes de estadounidenses a Cuba y las oportunidades de inversión en la isla.
