WPL 2025: MI’s Harmanpreet fined 10% of match fee for showing dissent

Mumbai Indians skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was fined 10% of her match fee for breaching the Code of Conduct in the victory against UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League on Thursday (March 6, 2025). She admitted to the Level 1 offence, which pertains to showing dissent at an umpire’s decision.

The 35-year-old has been guilty of losing her cool on the field of play in the past. In July 2023, she received a two-match ban for her outburst against an umpiring decision while playing Bangladesh in Dhaka — she smashed the stumps with the bat following her dismissal and called the standard of umpiring “pathetic” in the post-match presentation.

At the Ekana Cricket Stadium on Thursday, Harmanpreet’s indiscretion occurred at the start of the 20th over of Warriorz’s innings. With MI found to be behind the clock on the over-rate, umpire Ajitesh Argal signalled for only four fielders to be outside the 30-yard circle for Amelia Kerr’s final over. It prompted Harmanpreet to go up to the umpire and voice her disagreement. When Sophie Ecclestone, who was the non-striker at the start of the over, chimed in, Harmanpreet’s temper boiled over and led to a fierce exchange of words.

“I was just trying to defuse the situation between Harman and Sophie,” Kerr said at the post-match presser. “It got a little bit heated out there. Both are very passionate and competitive. I’m a bit more laidback. I was just trying to calm the situation.”

Warriorz’s Georgia Voll made light of the incident. “Sophie is a bit of an angry aunt anyway. It was quite funny to watch,” said the 21-year-old Aussie. “But MI was seven minutes behind the over rate. So, I’m not really sure why Harman was mad at that.”
