Welfare Party of India launches mass movement against BJP-led government's amendments to Waqf Act, demanding withdrawal.
Welfare Party of India (WPI) will launch a week-long mass movement across the State from April 20 to 27, demanding the BJP-led government at the Centre to withdraw the recent amendments to Waqf Act.
Addressing a press conference on Saturday, WPI Kalaburagi district president Abdul Saleem Chittapuri and State secretary Mubeen Ahmad said that the week-long mass movement titled “Protection of Waqf is our Responsibility” aims to highlight the larger implications of Waqf (Amendment) Act through dharnas, seminars, signature campaigns and distribution of leaflets.
Mr. Chittapuri stated that the amendments to the Waqf Act are an assault on the Constitution of India, which fundamentally contradicts Articles 14, 25, 26, and 29. He asserted that the amended Act removes the provision empowering the Waqf board to inquire and determine if a property belongs to Waqf, which will further pave the way for encroachments on Waqf lands and weaken institutional safeguards.
Mr. Ahmed expressed that the amendments to the Waqf Act allow the Central government to frame rules regarding registration, and publication of proceedings of Waqf boards.
The amended Act mandates the inclusion of non-Muslims in the Central Waqf Council and State Waqf boards, which interferes with religious affairs and erodes the autonomy and rights of the Waqf Board and the Muslim community at large, he added.
They said that the WFI would intensify its agitation until the Central government revokes the Waqf Amendment Act.
