Think winter is over? Think again.
Periods of snow and strong winds are expected across Waterloo region and Guelph Friday, with up to 15 centimetres expected by Friday night, Environment Canada says.
The special weather statement issued Thursday afternoon warns of a total snowfall of 10 to 15 cm, with winds gusting 50 to 80 km/h. The snow may be mixed with rain at times on Friday afternoon and in the evening.
“We should be seeing snow start for the region probably mid to late morning, somewhere in the 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. time frame,” said Steven Flisfeder, meteorologist for Environment Canada.
Southeasterly winds gusting to 50 to 70 km/h Friday morning may create local blowing snow before temperatures rise into the afternoon.
Friday night, winds are expected to shift to the northwest, allowing gusts between 50 and 80 km/h. Winds are expected to ease as the system moves out of the province Saturday morning.
Slippery roads and sidewalks are likely, and isolated utility outages are possible as the system moves through the region.
“Give yourself extra time to get where you're going, keep safe distances between car lengths and watch for pedestrians since visibility could be reduced in blowing snow,” Flisfeder said.
Residents are reminded to take frequent breaks and avoid strain when clearing snow. Forecasts and alerts from Environment Canada should be monitored as conditions develop.
