Wimbledon Loses Another Star as Simona Halep Withdraws

Halep cited a calf injury a day after Dominic Thiem withdrew with an ailing wrist. Rafael Nadal, Naomi Osaka, Stan Wawrinka, Milos Raonic and David Goffin also will miss the tournament.

Wimbledon took another hit on Friday when Simona Halep, the defending women’s singles champion, said she also would skip the event because of a calf injury. Her announcement came a day after Dominic Thiem, the world’s fifth-ranked player and the defending U.S. Open champion, withdrew from the tournament because of a right wrist injury, and a week after Naomi Osaka and Rafael Nadal also said they would not play in the tournament. Like Thiem and several other top players, Halep cited a lingering injury and concerns about her ability to recover as reasons for dropping out.
