
What the US really needs to do about Cuba and Haiti

The situations are complex and immune to the kind of bold action people so desperately want when long-suffering populations, like Haitians and Cubans, are in such acute need of assistance, writes Dan Restrepo. But the hard, simple truth is the United States is not going to be the primary engine of political change in either nation. Meaningful, durable political change in both lies in the hands of the populations themselves.
In less than one week, this kind of call to action was made relative to not one, but two, unfolding crises in the Western Hemisphere.
Janet Mills and her allies are counting on a gender gap to narrow Platner’s wide lead ahead of the June 9 primary to decide who will face incumbent Republican Sen. Susan Collins. They are betting that the unfiltered style that has brought Platner widespread attention as someone who could help Democrats reach young men will backfire with women.
