Her 26-year-old's family, neighbours and friends, who were gathered at her home and watching the game, burst into celebrations when they knew that Mirabai had created history. In a video tweeted by news agency ANI, Mirabai’s relatives and friends were seen celebrating her silver medal-winning performance in the women’s 49kg category like never before. "We are very happy today. This is a result of her hard work. India and Manipur are proud of her," a relative told news agency ANI. Mirabai is one of six siblings and was born on 8 August, 1994, in Nongpok Kakching, a village 44 kms away from Manipur's capital Imphal. Mirabai's innate strength to lift firewood with little hassle at 12 was noticed when she accompanied her brother to collect wood for the house. With this monumental silver medal, Chanu has become the second Indian weightlifter to win an Olympic medal after Karnam Malleswari bagged bronze in the 69kg category at the 2000 Sydney Games when the weightlifting arena was opened to women for the first time.More Related News
