Watch Live: Kathy Hochul addresses New Yorkers after being sworn in as governor
CBSN
Kathy Hochul is addressing New Yorkers on Tuesday after being sworn in as governor just after midnight, becoming the first woman to hold the position. She takes over for Andrew Cuomo, who resigned following accusations of sexual harassment.
Hochul became the state's 57th governor at a brief, legally required ceremony in Albany. "It was a very emotional moment for me, and my family was there," Hochul told CBS New York after the swearing-in. "I thought about all the women who came before me, including my mother who was not there, but a lot of women through history, and I felt they passed the torch to me."Ashley White received her earliest combat action badge from the United States Army soon after the first lieutenant arrived in Afghanistan. The silver military award, recognizing soldiers who've been personally engaged by an attacker during conflict, was considered an achievement in and of itself as well as an affirming rite of passage for the newly deployed. White had earned it for using her own body to shield a group of civilian women and children from gunfire that broke out in the midst of her third mission in Kandahar province. All of them survived. She never mentioned the badge to anyone in her battalion.
