Shinzo Abe, Japan's longest-serving leader, was in grave condition after being shot while campaigning for a parliamentary election in the western city of Nara.
The 41-year-old, a former member of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force, opened fire at Abe with an apparently homemade gun.
Abe was making a campaign speech outside a train station when two shots rang out. Security officials were then seen tackling the suspect in a grey T-shirt and beige trousers.
