Manipur Assembly Elections 2022: The tenure of Manipur Legislative Assembly is scheduled to end on 19 March this year.
The voting for 60 seats of the Manipur assembly will be conducted in two phases on February 27 and March 3, the Election Commission Of India (ECI) announced on Saturday. The counting of the votes will be held on March 10.
The tenure of Manipur Legislative Assembly is scheduled to end on March 19 this year.
In 2017 Manipur Assembly Elections, Congress emerged as the single-largest party by winning 28 seats in the 60-member assembly. However, many leaders had quit the party. Later on, BJP which had won 21 seats managed to form the government with the support of three regional parties - Naga People's Front (NPF) National Peoples Party (NPP), the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), Independent candidate and even a poached Congress MLA. Nongthongbam Biren Singh became the state Chief Minister.
Over the past five years or so, 13 Congress MLAs have switched over to BJP. Congress veteran turned BJP's face - Chief Minister Nongthongbam Biren Singh has been able to steer the alliance for five years with a strong lobby inside the party in Manipur pushing BJP central leadership more than once for leadership change in the state. Biswajit Singh is another strong candidate from BJP who has made efforts to bridge the divide between the hills and the valley areas of Manipur and sustained peace.
