Virat Kohli might retire from T20Is after World Cup to extend his longevity in other formats: Shoaib Akhtar

Shoaib Akhtar has predicted that Virat Kohli might retire from the shortest format of cricket in order to extend his longevity in other formats. Kohli recently ended his century drought with his maiden T20I hundred.

Former Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Akhtar predicted that Virat Kohli might consider retirement from the shortest format of the game after the T20 World Cup 2022.

The upcoming ICC showpiece event will take place between October 16 to November 13 in Australia.

"Kohli might just take retirement after the T20 World Cup. He may do that to extend his longevity in the other formats. If I was him, I would have looked at the larger picture and taken a call," Akhtar said in a live session hosted by India.com.

The former India captain rubber stamped his return to form with his 71st international century and a maiden T20I hundred during the Super Four match against Afghanistan at the Asia Cup. Kohli finished the continental tournament as the second highest run-getter with 276 runs in five outings.

Kohli, who had suffered from a wretched run with the bat since November 2019, registered his century after over two years after showing glimpses of returning to form in the showpiece event in the UAE.

After India's premature exit from the Asia Cup, former cricketer Gautam Gambhir said Kohli got a long rope in spite of not scoring a hundred for three years and added that other batters would have been dropped had they not hit a century for such a long time.

During the Super Four match against Afghanistan, Kohli opened India's batting with KL Rahul. Kohli went onto score the highest individual T20I score by an India batter, remaining unbeaten on 122.
