USWNT win bronze to close out Tokyo Games

The United States women's national team won a spot on the podium after defeating Australia 4-3 in the bronze medal match. The team conclude their Olympic games with a third place medal, falling short of the gold medal expectations they placed on themselves, but close out a difficult tournament with an Olympic reward after a rocky start to the competition.   (GK) Adrianna Franch Was put into some dangerous moments by her backline but had good positioning to make a difference on potential saves that she didn't end up having to make. A strong showing in vocal leadership and organizing the backline in a big game after limited minutes in the tournament. 6.5 (DEF) Kelley O'Hara Better game than the quarterfinal and semifinal, and connected better with teammates in the attack. Went the full 90 minutes in this one and helped close out the match against a surging Australia as time expired. 7 (DEF)  Becky Saurebrunn Partnership with Davidson that got stronger over the match despite the two miscommunicating early. Crucially, helped mark Kerr throughout the match. 6 (DEF) Tierna Davidson Poor decision on the opening goal for Australia and could've closed more space on the service during the second goal, but got more comfortable and better positioned as the game went on. 6 (DEF) Crystal Dunne Sixth consecutive start for the defender during the Olympics and worked the left flank for the team alongside Rapinoe in the absence of Australia's Ellie Carpenter. Probably her most influential match of the tournament 7.5 (MID) Sam Mewis Struggled early in the first half to get settled into the match but connected better with teammates, earned a free kick, and got a look in front of goal as the half went on before ending her Olympic games at the hour mark. 6 (MID) Julie Ertz Helped disrupt things in the midfield against the Matildas and pestered Sam Kerr. Covered more ground defensively in the second half to help the team secure the win. After not starting the first match as she recovered from injury, she played every minute for five matches in a row.  6.5 (MID) Lindsey Horan Had her best game in the team's last game of the tournament, getting involved in the attack, and combining with the front line. Provided the assist on USA's third goal. 7 (FWD) Christen Press Good movement both on and off the ball as part of a front line that applied early pressure. Helped stretch the backline and create dangerous spaces for the team to expose. Forced two early saves to set the right tone (one leading to Rapinoe's first goal). 7 (FWD) Carli Lloyd ⚽ 51' ⚽ 45'+1, Active on the pitch from the opening whistle and scored two goals for the team and possibly could have had more before being subbed out in the 81st minute. A fitting send off for a USWNT legend. 8 (FWD) Megan Rapinoe Had a strong showing out on the left flank in part thanks to Carpenter being out for Australia. Had two world class goals, an Olimpico and one touch volley. Truly something special from the team's biggest star.   8.5 (SUB 1) Rose Lavelle Connected with teammates right away. Strong on the ball in possession, and helped the midfield close out the game in some tense final minutes against Australia. 6.5 (SUB 2) Tobin Heath Slotted in along the left side for Rapinoe and combined well with Dunn and others to help keep the attack active in the second half.  6 (SUB 3) Alex Morgan Not enough time to make an impact but still pressed for a goal. Came off the field with an injury. N/A Vlatko Andonovski Came to Tokyo with the top ranked team and the squad fell short of gold. The team will go home with the bronze, and a better finish than their 2016 Rio games, but their overall performances left much to be desired.
