US tourists are stranded in a Mexican beach town after a wave of violence erupted following the death of drug lord Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, Mexico’s most wanted cartel boss
• Cartel kingpin killed: Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, Mexico’s most wanted cartel boss and head of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel died Sunday after a Mexican military operation. • Wave of violence: The security operation in the town of Tapalpa in the western state of Jalisco sparked violence in several Mexican states, with suspected gang members setting buses on fire and blocking roads in some areas. • US tourists stranded: The US State Department urged American nationals in parts of Mexico to “seek shelter and remain in residences or hotels” until further notice. Several carriers, including American Airlines and Air Canada, suspended flights to Puerto Vallarta, leaving some tourists temporarily stranded. The US government has urged Americans in several Mexican states, including popular vacation spots in Jalisco, Baja California and Quintana Roo, to shelter in place as violence erupts across the country following the death of cartel leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes. While airports are operating normally, some domestic and international flights have been cancelled in both Guadelajara and Puerto Vallarta. Widespread roadblocks are also impeding airline operations, and all taxis and ride shares have been suspended in Puerto Vallarta.
