
US and allies impose new sanctions on Belarus over migrant crisis and ongoing human rights abuses

The United States joined with international allies to impose new sanctions on Belarus Thursday in response to the migrant crisis on the border with Poland and the political repression and ongoing human rights violations committed by the Lukashenko regime.
The US, United Kingdom, European Union, and Canada took coordinated action against a number of Belarusian entities and individuals in their latest effort to put pressure on Belarus's longtime strongman leader Alexander Lukashenko, who has been accused of using "innocent migrants as a political weapon, as an effort at destabilization," in the words of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and whose government has carried out a campaign of repression against activists, dissidents and journalists.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth risked compromising sensitive military information that could have endangered US troops through his use of Signal to discuss attack plans, a Pentagon watchdog said in an unclassified report released Thursday. It also details how Hegseth declined to cooperate with the probe.
