Unemployment claims jump to highest level in three months

The number of Americans filing jobless claims jumped last week to its highest level in three months, a sign the ongoing wave in COVID-19 infections driven by the Omicron variant is hitting the job market.
Some 286,000 people applied for first-time unemployment benefits in the week ended January 15 — an increase of 55,000 from the previous week, the U.S. Labor Department reported Thursday. That's the highest number of claims since mid-October, .
