The U.N. aid operations director said even though the U.S. issued exemptions aimed at lessening the impact on civilians in Yemen, sanctions on the Houthis could still affect innocents.
The U.N. aid operations director, Edem Wosornu, said that while the humanitarian community was concerned about "any potential adverse effects," she noted that Washington had issued exemptions aimed at lessening the impact on civilians in Yemen, where the U.N. says more than 18 million people need help.
"Nevertheless, we fear there may be an effect on the economy, including commercial imports of essential items on which the people of Yemen depend on more than ever," Wosornu told the U.N. Security Council.
