A state of emergency is to be introduced across all parts of Ukraine under government control, officials said Wednesday, while President Volodymyr Zelensky said reservists would be called up as Russian forces remain massed along Ukraine's borders.
The state of emergency measure, is expected to be approved by the Ukrainian Parliament within 48 hours and would last for 30 days, with the possibility of being extended for an extra 30 days.
The move comes less than two days after Russian leader Vladimir Putin ordered troops into separatist-held parts of eastern Ukraine, a move that raised fears of a broader conflict and triggered a raft of Western sanctions against Moscow. Further EU sanctions are due to be announced Wednesday.
President Joe Biden is expected to announce an executive order as early as Tuesday that would effectively shut down the US-Mexico border to asylum-seekers crossing illegally when a daily threshold of crossings is exceeded – a sweeping and controversial proposal that is likely to receive fierce pushback from progressives and immigration advocates.
