Udanapirappe Movie Review: Jyotika's family entertainer is disjointed and screams cliches

Director Era Saravanan’s Udanpirappe, starring Jyotika, Sasikumar and Samuthirakani, is a film that talks about the unbreakable bond between siblings. However, the film hardly makes you feel any emotion.
When the title card reads Udanpirappe (sibling in English), you know you have to brace yourself for a moving, emotional tale about, well, siblings. In the history of Tamil cinema, Sivaji Ganesan and Savitri’s Pasamalar is one iconic film that talks about the bond between siblings. Over the years, Tamil cinema has seen many films of the same ilk. Udanpirappe is cut from the same cloth as well.Mathangi AKA Chinnayi (Jyotika) is a doting mom, dutiful wife and a loving sister. However, she now lives apart from her brother Vairavan (Sasikumar). Mathangi and Sarkunam (Samuthirakani) suffer a personal loss and the latter feels it is because of Vairavan. So, he decides to cut ties with him. While Vairavan is a hot-headed righteous guy, Sarkunam is someone who believes in honesty. He wants the law to take its course and is dead against violence. In that, Sasikumar and Samuthirakani played roles that are extremely similar to what they have done before.Director Era Saravanan’s Udanpirappe, which talks about the union of the brother and sister, and their respective families, attempts to kindle that emotion in the audience with moving dialogues about human relationships and their importance in life. However, the film falls so short that we can’t even see the finish line. Udanpirappe screams clichés. One can predict the story even in their sleep.
