The president castigated the reports, which detailed the risks his top military adviser has laid out regarding a potential operation.
President Donald Trump on Monday bashed multiple media reports that suggested his top military adviser, Gen. Dan Caine, had issued warnings about the serious risks of a military operation against Iran.
“Numerous stories from the Fake News Media have been circulating stating that General Daniel Caine, sometimes referred to as Razin, is against us going to War with Iran,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. “The story does not attribute this vast wealth of knowledge to anyone, and is 100% incorrect. General Caine, like all of us, would like not to see War but, if a decision is made on going against Iran at a Military level, it is his opinion that it will be something easily won.”
Multiple outlets, including Axios, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal, published stories on Monday that said the Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman had reportedly identified the challenges of any potential operation, such as how a lack of munitions and support from allies could mean greater danger for U.S. troops. Parts of these reports also undercut Trump’s characterization of Caine’s position.
Axios, for instance, cited two sources who noted that Caine had raised the possibility of the U.S. being drawn into a prolonged conflict in Iran. The Washington Post similarly cited a source who said Caine had ”raised concerns about the scale of any Iran campaign, its inherent complexity and the possibility of U.S. casualties.”
The news outlets did not state that Caine was against going to war with Iran as Trump claimed.
