An aggrieved BJP has filed a complaint against TMC MLA Madan Mitra over conducting tarpan, naming BJP central vice president Dilip Ghosh and West Bengal Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari, on the occasion of Mahalaya. On Monday, BJP Mondal president Indranil Dasgupta registered a complaint at Bally Howrah Police Station against the MLA from Kamarhati Assembly constituency.
The saffron party alleged Mitra of hurting 'Hindu' sentiments by naming the two BJP leaders at the tarpan ritual. As per the complaint letter, the ritual is performed after the death of a person and people who are alive cannot be named in the ceremony, as per the Hindu religion.
As per tradition, Mahalaya is also the day when one pays their respect to their ancestors, a ritual known as 'tarpan'. Tarpan is conducted on the banks of the river Ganges for one's deceased family members.
Trinamool Congress senior leader Madan Mitra stirred controversy by performing Tarpan for BJP leaders Suvendu Adhikari and Dilip Ghosh. He also garlanded photographs of Adhikari and Ghosh.
While speaking to India Today, Mitra stated that post the panchayat elections in West Bengal, the BJP will die.
"Bengal BJP will be departing soon. There will be no one in the BJP to offer Tarpan. I am not categorically saying we are not against those people whose pictures are being shown. But we are against their atrocities. BJP will die totally after the Panchayet election which is scheduled for next year" said Mitra.
Mitra, having chosen both BJP leaders for the ritual, even installed garlands on portraits of Dilip Ghosh and Suvendu Adhikari.
