Digital literacy for school students
With a view to equipping students in rural areas with digital literacy, V.O. Chidambaram College in Thoothukudi has launched an initiative under its corporate social responsibility endeavours.
It has joined hands with Institute for Entrepreneurship and Career Development (IECD) of Bharathidasan University, Tiruchi, to give the students an opportunity to expand their horizons by learning and adapting to the online world, as computer proficiency has become indispensable to enter the competitive IT industry.
At the launch on March 28, Bharadhidasan University Vice-Chancellor V. Selvam inaugurated the initiative online and addressed the gathering. Collector K.Senthil Raj, Chief Educational Officer K. Bala Thandayuthabani, college secretary A.P.C.V .Chockalingam and Principal C.Veerabahu offered felicitations.
NSS camp at village
About 100 NSS volunteers of Kamaraj College, Thoothukudi, conducted a week-long camp at Sakkammalpuram, Sivagnanapuram under Servaikaranmadam panchayat. They planted saplings, improved roads, dug ponds and created eco-awareness among school students. In the evening, there were cultural programmes and talks by experts. The camp came to a close on March 29. D. Nagarajan, the Principal and NSS chairman of the college presented certificates to the volunteers. P. Saravanan, Office Superintendent, also participated in the camp. The arrangements for the camp were done by NSS Unit no.181 Officer J. Nagarajan, Assistant Professor of Zoology; and NSS Unit no.146 Officer T. Vasanthi, Assistant Professor of Economics.
Training programme
In 2021, five women from Mayithara, four of them MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) workers, found a common ground in their desire to create a sustainable livelihood by growing vegetables. Rajamma M., Mary Varkey, Valsala L., Elisho S., and Praseeda Sumesh, aged between 70 and 39, pooled their savings, rented a piece of land and began their collective vegetable farming journey under the Deepam Krishi group.
