Three persons lost their lives, while more than a hundred persons were injured in the traditional Banni festival at Devaragattu in Kurnool district late in the night on October 24.
The midnight event draws thousands of devotees from across the undivided Kurnool district every year, where more than 1,000 policemen were posted to prevent any untoward incidents.
Several persons climbed up a tree near the festival venue to get a better view. A tree branch gave in and came down with a thud, killing Ganesh (19) and Ramanjaneyulu (54) in the melee. Similarly, the heavy pushing and jostling witnessed at the temple took the life of Kuruva Prakash (35) of Ballari, who reportedly died due to suffocation. The injured were rushed to the government general hospitals at Aluru and Adoni.
It is an ancient practice for the nearby villagers to gather with sticks at the venue and clash with each other on the sidelines of the main festival.

Currently, only the services in the 32 series stop at the section of the road adjacent to the Broadway terminus, temporarily closed on account of reconstruction work. Small traders association tells R. Ragu that ensuring the services now accommodated at the temporary terminus at Island Grounds stop at NSC Bose road would benefit visitors to the markets in Parrys

The silent reading movement in the Mylapore-Mandaveli-RA Puram area showed up first at Nageswara Rao Park around two years ago, with modest ambitions, when Balaji launched it along with other reading enthusiasts from the region. This initiative has now moved parks, and seems to set to get entrenched in one. Due to renovation work at Nageswara Park, the reading session became irregular. With the Nageswara Rao park work gaining more surface area, it had to be shifted elsewhere. And it seems set to continue with a newly discovered green patch in RK Nagar in the Sundays to follow.
