Bhopal BJP MP Pragya Singh Thaku said, "There is no need to wear hijab in India. She said those who face trouble at their home should wear hijab there.
Bhopal BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur objected to women and girls wearing hijab at educational institutions. Addressing people at an event in Bhopal on Wednesday, she said, "There is no need to wear hijab in India. You should wear hijab at your home."
Pragya Singh Thakur's comments came amid the raging row over girls wearing hijab in parts of Karnataka. Widespread protests have been held across the state over the issue since last month.
Reacting to the controversy, Sadhvi Pragya said, "When students go to school, they wear the school uniform and follow the discipline of the educational institutions." She said this while drawing a comparison with disciples of 'gurukul' who wear 'bhagwa' (saffron) attire.
Pragya Singh Thakur said that khijab is used for hiding greying hair, while hijab is meant to cover faces.
"Hijab is a purdah. Purdah should be [used] against those who see you with evil eyes. But one thing is clear that Hindus don't see with evil eyes as they worship women," she said.
"It is the culture of Sanatan that women are worshipped here. Is there a need to wear hijab in this country where women's place is paramount? There is no need to wear hijab in India."
Those who face trouble [or are unsafe] at their homes should wear hijab there," Pragya Singh Thakur said in a video shared by news agency ANI. "You should wear hijab at your homes," she said while citing the marriage customs among Muslims.
