In Los Angeles, Shirley Raines and her group bring beauty and wellness to thousands of people living on Skid Row, giving them a chance to see something in themselves other than homelessness.
Now, more than a year after the last official population count, many of those working with homeless communities believe numbers are much higher.
Before the stealth bombers streaked through the Middle Eastern night, or the missiles rained down on suspected terrorists in Africa, or commandos snatched a South American president from his bedroom, or the icy slopes of Greenland braced for the threat of invasion, there was an idea at the White House.
