On the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Soviet Union, Andrei Kolesnikov looks back at the moment the flag above the Kremlin was lowered for the last time. Over the next three decades Putin has pushed the pedal on Soviet nostalgia for his own political gain.
On December 25, 1991, Mikhail Gorbachev addressed the Soviet citizens and announced his resignation as president. A little after 7:30 p.m. that same day, the Soviet flag, waving in the wind, was lowered from the flagpole above the presidential residence in the Kremlin.

Approximately 1,000 US soldiers with the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division are expecting to deploy in coming days to the Middle East, according to two sources familiar with the matter, adding to the growing military firepower in the region as the Trump administration says it is in talks with Iran to end the conflict.
