The Mets are counting on David Stearns to have learned his lesson for this roster shakeup

David Stearns has made bold moves before and been willing to let go of top players.
Back in 2022, during his last trade deadline while running the Brewers, he traded closer Josh Hader to the Padres in exchange for prospects.
The Brewers, who were in playoff contention at the time, ended up missing the postseason. Some players blamed not just losing their closer — but also the impact Hader’s exit had on the team’s confidence.
After the season, Stearns said the move “had a more pronounced impact than I thought it would at the time.”

Cade Cunningham, almost inarguably the best player in the East this season, is likely out for the remainder of the regular season. That’s the word out of Detroit following the depressing news that Cunningham punctured a lung when he took a knee to his side Tuesday from Washington’s Tre Johnson while chasing a loose ball.

Wednesday was another positive day at Yankees camp. For the first time since March 6, 2025 — an outing in which he knew “something wasn’t right,” which began a weeks-long saga that ended on the operating table for Tommy John surgery — Gerrit Cole was back on a mound and facing hitters in game action.
